Results of the Fukushima Press Tour for Overseas Media(March 4–5)

Date: March 4, 2026

1. Overview

○ A press tour was organized to provide journalists from major foreign media outlets based in Japan (print, radio, TV, etc.) with an opportunity to cover the current status of Fukushima Prefecture's recovery and environmental restoration efforts as well as its future initiatives, and to promote accurate understanding and international dissemination. The tour included visits to the Interim Storage Facility, the Great East Japan Earthquake and Nuclear Disaster Memorial Museum, Ukedo Elementary School in Namie Town, Fukushima Institute for Research, Education and Innovation, and Namie Future Farm.
○ A total of 19 journalists from 18 media outlets representing 12 nationalities participated: United States, United Kingdom, Russia, Brazil, Singapore, Germany, South Korea, Spain, France, Taiwan, Italy, and Japan.
○ This overseas press tour has been held annually since 2021, with a total of 53 journalists participating to date. Past coverage and reports have appeared in outlets such as Reporterre (France), JoongAng Ilbo (South Korea), and Taiwan Public Television Service (Taiwan).

2. Key comments from journalists(○:Positive, ●:Advice)

○ The interim storage facility initiative is outstanding. I don't consider the managed recycling of removed soil with radiation levels of 8,000 Bq/kg or less to be dangerous, and final disposal is also safe. I want to share this experience with others.
○ (Overall tour)It was very interesting and I learned a lot about Fukushima. I truly felt the necessity of revitalizing this region and sincerely appreciate the efforts of the government and local communities.
● (Overall tour)A program emphasizing almost exclusively positive outcomes could unintentionally lead to skeptical views. In complex environmental and social issues, it's hard to believe there are no remaining challenges, uncertainties, or negative aspects. A more balanced presentation that also addresses concerns, risks, and ongoing debates would actually strengthen credibility.
