On September 10th, Ms. Anna Clark from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) handed over “The Final Report on the IAEA Experts Meeting on Volume Reduction and Recycling of Removed Soil Arising from Decontamination Activities” to the Minister of the Environment ITO and the report was published.

The Experts Meeting was held by the IAEA to provide the international assessments and advices for measures taken by the Ministry of the Environment (MOE) Japan for the managed recycling removed soil etc.

Based on discussions during the three Experts Meetings, the Final Report, for example, states:
  • Work undertaken to date by the MOE Japan on the managed recycling and the final disposal of removed soil is consistent with the IAEA Safety Standards.
  • Looking ahead, beyond the demonstration phase, the MOE Japan is exploring solutions to meet fully the advice of the team of experts and maintain consistency with the IAEA Safety Standards, which can be confirmed by future follow-up assessments.

Taking account of the advices in the Final Report, the MOE Japan will proceed with consideration of standards for the managed recycling and the final disposal for the removed soil, and also promote initiatives for the final disposal outside Fukushima Prefecture.
