The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) held the 1st Experts Meeting on “Volume Reduction and Recycling of Removed Soil” from May 8th (Mon.) to 12th (Fri.). A total of nine members, four IAEA officials including Ms. Anna Clark, the head of the delegation, and five international experts came to Japan to attend the meeting.
The objective of this experts meeting is to share with the international community the knowledge and experience of initiatives taken by the Ministry of the Environment, Japan(MOEJ) for the recycling and final disposal of removed soil, and to obtain international evaluation and advice from technical and social perspectives, thereby fostering public understanding.
At the first meeting, IAEA experts and the MOEJ discussed the status of initiatives for recycling and final disposal of removed soil, as well as the progress of technological development strategies for volume reduction and recycling of removed soil.
On May 9th and 10th, the IAEA officials and international experts made site visits to the Interim Storage Facility and the demonstration project area in Nagadoro District of Iitate Village. They also exchanged opinions with Iitate Village Office officials and residents of the Nagadoro District, and courtesy visits were made to the Mayors of Iitate Village, Futaba Town, and Okuma Town.
On the 12th, the last day of the meeting, a courtesy visit was made to Mr. Nishimura, Minister of the Environment, Japan.
